(1723-1789)
   philosopher
Born in Heidelsheim in the Palatinate, Paul-Henri, baron d'Holbach, who was a contributor to the Encyclopédie, presented, in his Système de la nature (1770), published under a pseudonym, a materialistic view that was both mechanistic and atheistic. He is also the author of antireligious works (Le Christianisme dévoilé, 1767). His Paris salon, where he received jean-jacques rousseau and denis diderot, was one of the most famous of the period. The baron d'Holbach insisted on the necessity of morality in politics (Éthocratie, ou le Gouvernement fondé sur la morale, 1776).
